About CT scanning

What is industrial CT scanning?

Industrial computed tomography produces a complete three-dimensional reconstruction of a part's internal and external geometry from thousands of X-ray projections. Unlike a CMM or an optical scanner, CT measures the entire volume — every internal surface, cavity, defect, and wall thickness — in a single acquisition, without contact and without destroying the sample.

What is the difference between NDT and metrology?

NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) looks for defects: porosity, cracks, inclusions, delaminations. Metrology measures dimensions: bores, wall thicknesses, GD&T tolerances, surface deviation against CAD nominal. Probeam uses the same scan data for both purposes — what differs is the analysis.

Which materials can be scanned?

Aluminium, plastics, polymer composites, carbon-ceramic, ceramics, and additive manufactured parts are well within the range of our microfocus kV system. Steel and dense alloys generally require the high-energy (megavolt) modality available through our partner network. If you are not sure which is right for your part, send us a description and we will advise.

Project workflow

How do I request a scan?

Send us a short description of the part — material, approximate size, and what you need to find or measure — by email or via the contact form. We respond with a quotation, an indicative turnaround, and shipping instructions.

Where do I ship the part to?

For Microfocus kV scans (small to medium parts) the address is our laboratory in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland. For Megavolt CT scans of large or dense parts, we coordinate shipping to a partner facility in South Germany or North Italy on your behalf — you ship to a single address, we deliver the data.

How long does a typical project take?

For Microfocus kV scans, scan-to-report turnaround is often within the same working week. For high-energy parts, the typical end-to-end time is two to four weeks depending on partner availability and analysis complexity. We confirm the turnaround in writing as part of every quotation.

Can you handle parts with strict customer confidentiality requirements?

Yes. All customer parts and scan data are treated as confidential by default and are used solely to deliver the requested service. We sign customer NDAs on request and can operate under your specific data-handling requirements.

Data, deliverables, and software

What do I receive at the end of a scan?

The standard deliverable is a download link containing the CT Viewer executable, the volume data, and an open-format H5 sidecar file with all markups, measurements, bookmarks, and view states from our analysis. Optional deliverables include PDF reports, Zeiss Inspect project files (for metrology), and custom data exports.

Do I need to install special software to view the data?

No. Probeam CT Viewer is a single signed executable — no installation, no IT ticket, no licence dongle. Free for all scanning customers. Double-click and you are looking at your scan.

Is my data locked into Probeam's file format?

No. The H5 sidecar uses the open HDF5 format and can be opened by any HDF5-compatible tool. The volume data is delivered in a format that can be re-imported into other CT visualisation suites including VolumeGraphics and Zeiss Inspect X-Ray.

Pricing, billing, and accreditation

How is a scan priced?

Pricing depends on part size, material, scan resolution, and the analysis you need. We quote a fixed price per project after seeing the part description; there are no hidden per-feature or per-export fees. VAT (MWST) is added in accordance with Swiss law.

Are scans accredited?

Probeam operates within the Suisse Technology Partners facility in Neuhausen am Rheinfall — an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited materials laboratory. Metrology scans are aligned with the methodology described in VDI/VDE 2630 Part 1.3. Measurement uncertainty is calculated per scan and available on request.

Do you serve customers outside Switzerland?

Yes. We routinely work with customers across Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and the wider EU. Customs clearance for inbound and outbound shipments can be arranged through our partners.
